THE FOCUS FILM FESTIVAL is a student-run filmmaking competition that provides students from all faculties at Queen’s University the opportunity to explore their interests in filmmaking. Participants are randomly split into groups based on different experience levels and must write, shoot, and edit a short film in one weekend based on a mystery theme.
WHAT IS THE FOCUS FILM FESTIVAL?
THE FOCUS FILM FESTIVAL is one of the oldest weekend-filmmaking festivals in Canada, having been founded in 2002. Now entering its 13th year, FOCUS has grown to include almost 100 participants annually.
We oversee the creation of more than 10 short films each year. These films are then judged by professionals from the Canadian film industry and screened at a huge gala event. It’s one of the highlights of the Queen’s art scene.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Each participant is put into a group with other filmmakers, with as even a distribution of experience and equipment as possible. On the Thursday night of the competition weekend and is presented with a theme to base their ideas around. The groups then have 72 hours to write, film, and edit their short films and must submit it as a .mov file to the FOCUS Exec team by the end of the Sunday night.
WHEN IS IT?
The 2016 FOCUS FILM FESTIVAL'S filming weekend will take place over January 8th-10th and the screening gala will take place on January 28th. Hope to see you there!
WHO CAN ENTER?
Anyone! As long as you go to Queen's, you can enter.
BUT I DON'T HAVE ANY FILMMAKING EXPERIENCE, CAN I STILL ENTER?
You can still enter! THE FOCUS Exec team will divide the participants into groups based on the amount of experience and skills (i.e. directing, acting, editing) they possess.
Participants with little to no experience tend to be grouped with upper-year Film & Media students who really know what they’re doing. Rather than concentrating on creating a polished film, the FOCUS FILM FESTIVAL's goal is to create a fun filmmaking weekend where experienced filmmakers can have fun and new filmmakers can learn the ropes.
BUT I DON'T OWN ANY EQUIPMENT, ARE YOU SURE I CAN ENTER?
Of course you can! The FOCUS Exec also consider what equipment the participants have when creating the groups. Each group will have some form of equipment (i.e. camera, editing software) but can also rent anything else you made need from local businesses around Kingston.
**We require that our participants DO NOT rent equipment from the Film & Media Department as Film & Media students need it in order to complete their final projects**
WHERE AND WHEN CAN I REGISTER?
Registration will be open from November 9th to 13th and will be set up at the tables in the Arc. Fill out the registration form and hand it in with your $20 registration fee by November 13th to be entered in this year's festival.
CAN I INTERN WITH THE FESTIVAL?
Of course you can! Interns for our 2016 festival are able to apply through filling out the form on our Get Involved page.
